Making Progress for a Greener Future: Building a Greener Future, One Plastic Desk at a Time-06/10/25

At Mckingtorch Africa, we have always believed that sustainability isn’t just about reducing waste, it’s about transforming it. That’s why we are excited to share a significant milestone in our journey: with support from UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, we received a grant in April to produce 500 school desks made from recycled sachet waste and 50 sustainable waste receptacles for schools across the country.

This project is important to us because it symbolizes progress, possibilities, and a growing belief in locally sourced solutions to address some of our most pressing environmental challenges. Since 2019, Mckingtorch has played an instrumental role in contributing to Ghana’s National Plastic Waste Management Policy, which was passed into law by Parliament in 2020. The UNDP Ghana made it possible for several startups in the circular economy sector to make direct contributions to this policy. During the 2020-2021 period, Mckingtorch Africa’s project was selected as one of the few innovative solutions by UNIDO to benefit from the GEF program.

With this new partnership, Mckingtorch will provide more schools with desks made entirely from recyclable plastic, demonstrating how waste can be turned into valuable resources that benefit both the environment and future generations.

The next 24 months will be critical as Mckingtorch continues its work, expanding its efforts to produce more desks and further develop sustainable waste management systems in Ghanaian schools. We aim to produce desks that serve young learners while also addressing Ghana’s plastic waste crisis head-on. This initiative is a clear reminder that when local innovation is paired with the right support, real impact is possible.

Together, we can create a future where plastic waste is not a problem but an opportunity for positive change. Let’s support these efforts and advocate for solutions that turn environmental challenges into stepping stones for a brighter, greener future.
