From Trash to Treasure: A Green Statement at Legon 5/23/25

In October 2022, the University of Ghana’s Botany Department added more than just benches to their garden; they made a bold statement. Sustainability took a stylish seat at the Botany Department—quite literally. Two “lover’s benches,” crafted entirely from 100% recycled plastic waste collected from the streets of Accra, found a new home on the campus.

This initiative was led by the Botany Society, which made the bold choice to blend environmental action with everyday student life. The benches weren’t just seats; they became symbols of what is possible when innovation meets purpose.

Nestled among trees and flowers, these benches provide a resting place and sparks conversation about the planet, our responsibility to it, and how small actions can shape a greener future.

It was a proud moment for us at Mckingtorch Africa serving as a reminder that every piece of plastic can tell a new story- one of community, commitment, and care for the planet.
