Our amazing second cohort of recycled glass jewelry making training as part of the ECOFEM Project have officially completed their training thanks to Kor.Le.Kour’s Priscilla Korlekour Agyeman. During their weeks of training, the girls have had some amazing experience learning about photo modeling, product design, colour schemes and more.
To mark the conclusion of the four-week Sustainable Jewelry Making class under the ECOFEM sustainability startup incubation by Mckingtorch Africa, the students took a 10-hour field trip to visit bead industries in Accra, including the renowned TK Beads at Dodowa, known for crafting beautiful handmade beads from recycled glass and plastic. Drawing from their training in product design, marketing, time management, and more, the students organized this visit to purchase materials for their upcoming jewelry collections, which they also plan to sell at an upcoming exhibition. This initiative demonstrates their creativity, independence, and commitment to sustainable practices, despite their diverse backgrounds as head porters, unemployed graduates, single mothers, and small business owners. The ECOFEM Project team is proud of their proactive approach, as these young women are poised to break gender barriers, gain financial independence, and create lasting change in their communities.
Additioanlly, in commemoration of the 10th Year Anniversary of Environment 360, a female-led non-profit focused on environmental sustainability, our girls from the ECOFEM project at McKingtorch Africa were in attendance to grace this great feat. It was such an inspiring event that offered more than just a social gathering, it was an opportunity to learn and grow. The girls gained insights into Environment 360’s pioneering journey in the sustainability space, including their national and global achievements, as well as their track record in climate action. They also had an amazing time exploring and touring the circular economy hub in Dodowa, where they saw how plastic and electronic waste is transformed into beautiful, eco-friendly products like jewelry and art pieces. The event was a powerful reminder of women’s leadership in the green economy, and truly inspired our girls to continue pursuing careers in this vital field.
Following their training sessions and feild trips, many of the ECOFEM trainees have sold their beuatiful jewelry peices at various exhibitions and other events. We are proud of the success many of the grisl have been able to garner.
We are grateful to our sponsors and donors for enabling this transformative program. This project is funded by World University Service of Canada, UNFPA Ghana, Global Affairs Canada and supported by Purim African Youth Development Platform.
